About Tonka

Mykal and Kate Bartholomew's one-hat modern Indian room on Duckboard Place — opened in 2013 in the former Honky Tonks nightclub space, sister to basement Coda down Flinders Lane. The Good Food Guide (updated October 2025) still lists Tonka among Melbourne's polished modern-Indian destinations: pani puri and Crystal Bay prawn betel leaves open the current card, tandoori chicken and Meredith ex-dairy goat salli botti anchor the mains, and gulab jamun closes. Naomi Troski's ceiling artwork, Flinders Street views through sweeping windows, and a three-zone layout (Thali bar for walk-ins, restaurant bar with full menu, bookable dining room) make the laneway room feel polished but welcoming. SevenRooms handles online bookings for parties up to 16; Thali bar serves drinks Tue–Sun from noon (Mon from 5:30pm) with express Thali lunch Tue–Fri 12–2pm.
