About Shamiat
On Victoria Road Northcote, partners Helda Almorani and Atallah Abo run Shamiat—a halal, family-run Syrian restaurant, bakery-cafe, and sweets shop they opened around 2019 after leaving Syria in 2016. Three adjoining storefronts cover the day: the cafe for traditional Syrian breakfasts (Family Breakfast with fatteh, foul mudammas, haloumi, and spreads), the sweets counter for baklava and ma'amoul, and a Damascus-style dining room for shared mezza and mains such as lamb-stuffed kibbeh, charcoal grills, and muhammara. Chef Helda has refined the menu for 25+ years; the room is BYO with vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options called out on the menu. Walk-ins and phone/email bookings welcome.
From diners
My friend and I shared the mixed grill (Arabic mashawi) with kebab, chicken, lamb fillet, and lamb cutlet skewers served with labneh. The lamb fillet skewers were a standout for me, especially paired with the muhammara bread, and I finished on a high note with a pistachio baklava for dessert.
