About Us

Historic Acland Street cake shop trading since 1934, when Polish migrant Pearl Levine moved her family's continental bakery from Lygon Street Carlton to the same St Kilda premises it still occupies. Recipes brought from Poland in the 1920s — butter, flour, eggs and sugar baked without premixes — power Eastern European signatures from Polish baked cheesecake and chocolate kooglhoupf to plum cake, poppy seed delight and French lemon tart; slices and whole cakes sell from the glass counter with coffee for locals and tourists on the strip. Gideon Markham's family has run day-to-day baking since 1996 while preserving the art-deco signage and old-world shopfront. Verified open Jun 2026: Google Maps business status OPERATIONAL with active hours and recent reviewer traffic; Broadsheet (May 2024) and Corner (Mar 2026) maintain current listings with no permanent-closure signal — the operator website footer is dated 2014 but still advertises walk-in cake and coffee.
