About Kakilang Char Koay Teow CBD

Kakilang Char Koay Teow CBD is a Bourke Street Malaysian hawker-style restaurant specialising in Penang char koay teow — saltier and more wok-hei-forward than the KL/Singapore versions most Melburnians know (The City Lane, Feb 2025). The Hokkien name "kaki-lang" means "one of us"; Penang natives Ping Ch'ng and Rayvin Vello run the brand with Patricia Cheong and Calvin Lim, expanding from their long-running Balwyn shop to this CBD dining room in late 2024. Counter service with QR ordering fills a spacious room that also hosts private events at The Vault @ Bourke. The menu spans char koay teow (vegetarian and add-ons like duck egg), char mee, nasi lemak, Hainanese chicken rice, hokkien mee, asam laksa, popiah, lok bak, kaya toast, cendol, and Malaysian drinks from kopi-o to teh tarik. Chef Ross Lusted (Marmelo) singled out the Penang noodles and Malaysian coffee in Broadsheet's underrated-restaurants roundup (May 2026).
