About Us

Smith Street institution pairing a Japanese grocery with a made-to-order sushi bar — named for hinoki cypress and opened by owner Hayato Takasaka (Broadsheet). Shelves and fridges stock mirin, dashi, noodles, sake, beer, snacks, ceramics and homewares while chefs at the rust-orange counter turn out sashimi-grade nigiri, traditional maki, house nose-maki (topped rolls), chirashi bowls and large sushi–sashimi platters for takeaway; custom platters are available for events. Limited window-bench seating — most guests order in-store or online via Square. Closed Mondays; Tue–Sat 10am–6pm, Sun 11am–5pm (official site, June 2026).
