About Apa's Canteen
Family-run Bhutanese-inspired canteen in Melbourne CBD, opened in late 2025 by Sonam Thinley with her parents Karma and Kencho Wangmo Thinley. The menu centers on Himalayan flavors including ema datshi rice balls, hoentey dumplings, chana fried rice, and buckwheat noodles.

I explored their winter menu and tried the Bathup, featuring soft handmade dough balls in a rich pork bone broth topped with fried shakam. The flavours were comforting and vibrant, with a nice level of spice. I skipped the ema datshi, remembering how spicy it was when I had it in Bhutan in 2024. Instead, I ordered the beef momo, which was juicy and satisfying. I also tried Suja, Bhutanese butter tea, and found it smooth and savoury with a distinct buttery taste. Highly recommended place.
